West Texas Chess Clubs


The Permian Basin (a region consisting of the petroleum-producing lands of West Texas and Southeastern New Mexico; it is a large area surrounding Midland and Odessa, Texas.)

The Permian Basin Chess Club, a USSF affiliate, meets regularly and sponsors tournaments. It has a website at http://pbcc.50gigs.net/ and is led by Dr. Owen Capocyan at ocapocyanmd@yahoo.com and 832-202-6600 and by Steve Dudley at the_ixian@yahoo.com. The PBCC meets every Thursday at the University of Texas of the Permian Basin (UTPB) Student Union from 6:00 to 9:45 p.m. in Odessa, Texas.

The Midland County Chess Club meets at Barnes & Noble Bookstore in Midland, Texas, on Monday nights from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. It has a website at http://pbcc.50gigs.net/mcc.html. The Barnes & Noble Bookstore is at 2617 West Loop 250. The MCCC is also an affiliate of the USCF. You can contact the MCCC by writing to Charlie Vetter at beernoser@yahoo.com.

Both clubs are doing well and attracting more people every time they meet.

The West Texas Chess League is a forum for competition among the chess clubs of West Texas: Abilene Chess Club, SPICE in Lubbock, San Angelo Chess Club, Midland County Chess Club. It has a website at http://pbcc.50gigs.net/wtcl.html.

Lubbock

The Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence (SPICE) is led by Grandmaster Susan Polgar, the strongest woman chess players in history. In its first two years, the SPICE team has captured two state chess titles and one national title.

TTU Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence is a blog by Susan Polgar chronicling chess activity at Texas Tech and SPICE.

The Lubbock Chess Club was founded in 2005. Its apparent website is at http://groups.myspace.com/lubbockchessclub.
